I installed Virtual Box on Windows 7 64 bit and set up a windows OS on the VB. But I'm unable to access fileshares on the hosting system. Teh VB windows 7 can access the internet, but not local filesares. Is this a configuration issue?

More than likely.
If you are wanting network shares to show you must use Bridged or host-only and both machines need to be in the same subnet.
You can always use the VirtualBox shared folders.
