Windows Explorer keeps on crashing

Windows explorer crashes every few minutes.
It started when I re-installed the Host. I used to run Linux Mint, moved to Ubuntu.
I have tried: Removing the guest additions, upgrading VBox, downgrading VBox, etc.
Any ideas?

Some more details:
I am currently running virtualbox 4.1.12, I've tried approximately half of the releases since 4.0.8 to fix this issue. Before the Host os re-install I was on 4.0.something. When I re-installed the Host, I installed a new Virtual box, 4.1.6 or something like that. When it failed, I think I tried 4.1.8, and when that didn't help, I went back to the 4.0.x versions. I've stuck to those for a while, living with the problem, ignoring it for the most part. I skipped the first bunch of the 4.1.x releases due to regressions / known issues affecting features that I had been using.
I have only one VM that I use regularly, that being this specific one. The other VMs are typically short-lived, so much so that I didn't even bother to bring over any other VMs when I re-isntalled the Host OS.
The affected VM is running Windows 7 professional 32-bit, and is regularly updated. I know very little about Windows - I just reboot it when it stops working or causes problems, and other than that scratch arround with the built-in troubleshooters. The Windows VM is purely to access the corporate / intranet websites and for printing on the office printers (requires MS Windows authentication).
For everything else I use Linux or Unix because I know what I'm doing there.
Some other things that I've tried:
Removed USB
Removed Shared Folders
Un-installed guest additions (this proved difficult - the virtual CD stubbornly would not eject (no error was displayed though), but I eventually managed to get it to eject and mount the guest additions disk). I think this was related to the Live-CD checkbox, but this is not available in some of the versions I tried and the checkbox was quite persistent!

I doubt anyone can help you without full details of the crash. Perhaps also post the VM log file as a zipped attachment.

I doubt that VBox would log anything -
When this happens, all the Windows explorer processes freezes, including the Desktop and the taskbar. After this the desktop becomes blank and the taskbar disappears. Then it restarts (comes back) and works fine for about a minute or so. Then it happens again. Since the error box is persistent, I just drag it to the side so that I can continue working in whatever other applications I'm busy with (Eg outlook, PDF viewer, etc)

Just in case ...

Terminology problem: the screenshots show a hang, not a crash - which now explains why you couldn't provide crash details.
Does the VirtualBox manager give any warnings related to display memory allocation? I see one warning in the log about a display resize being postponed.
I've known XP's shell explorer to hang on native PCs, Explorer has a lot of stupid features each scanning folders, loading image files into RAM (including entire AVIs) in order to... nobody can adequately explain. It may be something as simple as Ubuntu having a new folder (possibly a shared folder) containing a complex and perhaps also large file that explorer doesn't like. Symptoms would be that as soon as you touch a specific folder tree, you get the hang. I don't use Win7, so can't really say how prone it is to similar problems.

Hello mpack.
Thank you for your response.
"Virtualbox manager?"
I don't get warnings from the Virtualbox GUI, or from the VBoxManage CLI. How/where/where would they produce these warnings?
I get a warning about display bit depth when i start up the VM (The VM is optimized to work in 32 bit mode but the display is set to 32 bit mode bla bla bla. Might be the other way round too)
I have now upped the allocated display ram from 32MB to 128 MB. I'll see if that helps though I will be surprised if it does.

No improvement from increasing the allocated display memory.

I have the same problem since I upgraded to 4.1.12.
Before It never happened.
Almost every day Virtualbox hangs and I get "Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager Stopped Working" windows.
I use windows 7 64bit host and Ubuntu 64bit guest.
It seems it's a vboxdd.dll issue.

NVIDIA 280.13 < Release 280 drivers have KNOWN crashes in the opengl client driver due to some bugs in the multithreaded opengl code.
use a new package.
