USB problem?

Post by Chrisfr »

OS: Mac OS X 10.6.8
Model Name: iMac
Processor Name: Intel Core i3
Processor Speed: 3,06 GHz
Memory: 4 GB

Hi,

Since I installed the last version of VirtualBox (4.1.12-77245), I have the same problem on my iMac (the launching of the virtual machine fails), but not with my MacBook Pro, with the same MacOSX (10.6.8 ), when I launch a virtual machine (the same problem with Windows XP or Windows 3.1). I have the same problem (but not the same messages) if I try to install an older version of the Virtualbox.

I found a workaround: reinstall VirtualBox, which works fine until I reboot the iMac.

The problem is the following:

The session with the virtual machine failed.
Message:

The virtual machine [Windows XP or Windows 3.1] has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1.
Details:
=============================================
Error code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Composant: Machine
Interface: IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91}
=============================================

I have also a message from the virtual machine I was trying to lauch:

=============================================
RTR3Init failed with rc=-1912 (rc=-1912)
=============================================

If I look at the log file, I read following:

=============================================

And If I reinstall VirtualBox, I don't read anymore "USBLib: Couldn't find any matches.".

So, what can I do?

Did you also update the extension pack?

As far as I can compare the situation on two machines (iMac and MacBook Pro) with the same system (10.6.8), and as far as I encounter the problem with one machine (iMac) and not with the other, I tried to notice differences.

With the iMac, I found another problem (not directly with VirtualBox) with the same file (a floppy manager):

/System/Library/Extensions/swim3.kext

Wile installing an application (and VirtualBox also, If I remember), or updating Mac OS X, I found the same message:

"The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/swim3.kext" wasn't installed correctly, and can't be used. Try to reinstall it, or ask for an update to your reseller."

I don't know how this file was installed. I think I had the same file on the MacBook Pro, but not anymore.
Version and copyright: floppy version 1.0.0d1, Copyright 2000 MySoftwareCompany, Inc.

Maybe if I could reinstall or better uninstall it, it would change something (?)

If you have the Swim 3 Floppy Driver installed it is ancient, and designed for much earlier versions of OS X (Power PC) than what you're using now. See SWIM 3 Floppy Driver X.

You may want to check the installer for it and see if there are any instructions on how to uninstall it.

When you re-installed VirtualBox did you use the VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool first to uninstall it? If you didn't try unistalling VB with the tool and then re-installing VB.

I removed the Swim 3 Floppy Driver. Yes, I used the VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool fist, before re-installing VirtualBox. But I have still the same problem.
And if I try to configure the machine, I find the following message:

==========================
Access error to the USB sub-system.
Could not load the Host USB Proxy service:
VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE.
Details:
Error code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x00004005)

IHost {dab4a2b8-c735-4f08-94fc-9bec84182e2f}
Called function:
IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91}
==========================

And it isn't possible to deactivate the USB controller.

The problem was iEmulator V Virtualizer.
Indeed that software is only an old version of VirtualBox (and not free!), wich installs a file you have to remove yourself (there is no uninstaller) :

/System/Library/Extensions/VBoxDrv.kext

After removing that file all works fine!
