Mac OSX 10.6.8 Host w/ Ubuntu 11.10 Kernel Panic

Hello all,
First off, I am new to using Linux and virtualization, but I have been researching a lot of information. I have attempted to search for solutions to this issue, but I have not found any other topics relating to this.
My issue is, I have successfully installed Virtual Box 4.1.12 onto my Mac 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I create the disk image and profile for Ubuntu, and it is functional. I then load my Ubuntu 11.10 disc for install, and the disc boots to the purple "Ubuntu" splash screen. After a few minutes of loading, ONLY the Ubuntu virtual box displays a Kernel Panic and the installation stops.
Mac osx 10.6.8 is fully up-to-date and does not kernel panic either. Anyone know what the possible fix for this could be? I would like to get Ubuntu installed so I can finally test out a Linux system for the first time.
