Detect the hosts IP

Post by nickname »

Hey there. I'd like to know if there is any way to find out which Host a VirtualBox runs on. in NAT/Host-Only this is obvoiusly no problem, but otherwise?!
I thought a traceroute would tell me (host as last hop before destination is reached), but it isn't?!

thank you

When requesting such information always keep in mind that the guest is untrusted from the host's point of view. Therefore information about the host is normally not available for the guest, except perhaps the version number of VirtualBox the guest is running on. But if you need to access any information about the host in the guest you have to share it explicitly, for instance using guest properties which can be written by the host and read by the guest, see the user manual for details.

For bridged networking, the VM host is just another network client on the same network as the guest. And for NAT, the guest has only a limited view on the network at all.
