I must admit that I've seen a similar problem, but in my case it was just a one off (so far). Frozen on shutdown, no response from app, eventually I had to stop the VirtualBox and VBoxSVC processes in the task list.

The last part of my log from that session was:

Code: Select all

00:01:20.980 Changing the VM state from 'POWERING_OFF' to 'OFF'.
00:01:20.982 Console::powerDown(): A request to power off the VM has been issued (mMachineState=Stopping, InUninit=0)
00:01:21.177 ERROR [COM]: aRC=E_ACCESSDENIED (0x80070005) aIID={1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} aComponent={Console} aText={The virtual machine is being powered down}, preserve=false
00:01:22.186 ERROR [COM]: aRC=E_ACCESSDENIED (0x80070005) aIID={1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} aComponent={Console} aText={The virtual machine is being powered down}, preserve=false
00:01:23.177 ERROR [COM]: aRC=E_ACCESSDENIED (0x80070005) aIID={1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} aComponent={Console} aText={The virtual machine is being powered down}, preserve=false
[ repeat last line ad infinitum ]
The error line was repeated many more times in the log, I deleted all but three for the purposes of posting.

The log file is called "VBox.log", you can find it in the "Logs" subfolder of the VM folder. Zip it and attach the zip to a message here.

this tends to be caused by not updating the guest extensions or vbox additions

Were those phrases designed to be confusing? :) The usual terms are Guest Additions and VirtualBox Extension Pack.

True, I don't always update the GAs on a working template VM - but the intermittent (in my case) nature IMHO makes me doubt this suggestion, unless its a bug interacting with some rare condition on my PC. I wouldn't come to any conclusion (or take any action) without better evidence.

ha, yeah.

its more likely a rare condition that affects versions of vbox itself.
