Hi all,

I have a 2000 SP4 server guest that I converted from a real machine (the original was a dual P3 1ghz with 1gb ram). As a VM it now has two CPUs (the real host ones are 2.2ghz xeons - two dual core) and 2gb ram. So the VM basically has better hardware than the real server it once was.

The problem is that it is a resource hog - the CPUs spike high all the time compared to any other guest I could run - ubuntu, XP, whatever. The server has the guest additions. In fact, I can run multiple guests at the same time and take less resources than this single VM.

Is there anything I am missing or can tweak to stop this?

I did this a few times and can tell you that giving Windows 2000 more cores/processors than what it was installed with is the problem. Microsoft strongly suggested to not try to upgrade 2000 to multi-processors but to install new for a reason. You can get it to work by replacing the single to multi kernel, other drivers Etc. but it will not work properly (never did for me).

thanks for the reply. But it originally had two CPUs & I set the VM to two CPUs. So that's pretty much the same.

I've been researching on how to solve this issue, and came across the "execution cap" setting so that a VM won't swamp the host CPUs.

Are there any recommendations on a setting? As bad as the effect of this 2000 server VM is, I am tempted to put it on 50% just to see what happens.

Are there any known issues with setting an execution cap on any other OSes? 2003 server? Ubuntu?
