Can't update to 4.1.12-77245 extension pack - Solved

I've upgraded to 4.1.12 r77245. That installation went well. I tried to install the extension pack for it, also r77245. I get this error message. The Host is Mandriva Linux and the guest is Windows XP

Failed to install the Extension Pack /home/user/Download/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.12-77245.vbox-extpack.
The installer failed with exit code 127: Error creating textual authentication agent: Error opening current controlling terminal for the process (`/dev/tty'): No such device or address.

I tried installing the 4.1.12-77245 extension pack through the command line VBoxManage install tool, but it wants me to remove the previous extension pack first. I'm reluctant to do that in case I can't get it back if the 4.1.12 can't be installed.-

If the --replace does not work then you must use the --remove and then --install
You might also need to run the cleanup too.

I can't get the format of the file name correct when I try remove or replace. I get an "Invalid extension pack name specified" error. I tried several variations of the file name with full path or with no path and it didn't like anything I could think of. I was in the .VirtualBox directory when I tried this so the files were right there.

When I get typo problems like that I copy the filename from a browser into a small script file, and run the script. Putting quotes around the filename, of course.

Hi!

I had an issue installing v4.1.12-77245 extension pack.
Using GUI or vboxmanage the install just hanged.

Turns out the v4.1.12-77245 extension pack I had downloaded was truncated.
Downloading again and the extpack install worked without issues (this is Fedora 16 host).
Guess I downloaded from a site where the updated version was being updated.

I can confirm from personal experience that the extension pack file size seemed to be about 1MB short for several hours. Eventually I gave up and postponed the download until next day. The main (Windows x86) installer package had no problem. Not a complaint I hasten to add, just an observation. Normally I wouldn't be so quick to download, but I just happened to be there with some free time on my hands. Frank was quite clear in his announcement that his uploads might take several hours.

Yes, it can take a while. What's more, the downloads go through a content distribution system, so even if the upload is completed on our side it doesn't mean everyone can download it. It can also happen that some people can get the full downloads before others, depending on which actual server they're downloading from.

The upshot is that it takes a while (several hours at least) for the files to settle down and we have no control over that.

Could I get the exact format that VBoxManage extpack uninstall wants? I'm trying to uninstall v4.1.8 r75467 and I've tried every listing and format I can think of. No quotes, single quotes, double quotes, without the .vbox-extpack extension, simply 4.1.8-75467, and so on.

The file as downloaded is named like this "Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.8-75467.vbox-extpack", but that won't work. I get the "Invalid extension pack name specified" error.

... You can use VBoxManage list extpacks to show the names of the extension
packs which are currently installed; please see chapter 8.3, VBoxManage list, page 111

Ray,

Thanks for your example. I did use VBoxManage list to see which ext pack was installed. I used the file name as in your example Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.12.vbox-extpack, but for 4.1.8. That didn't work.

I see from your example that I should have been not specific in the extension pack name to remove.
VBoxManage extpack uninstall "Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack". I didn't think of that.

Also, from your example to install the extension pack the file name does need to be specific with the entire name, underlines and all, but without the quotes.

I did read the instructions, printed the relative paragraphs, studied the whole thing, but the examples you show are not there. Need intuition I guess. I'm printing your example and I'll keep it with all my other VBox info.

Following your example for uninstalling/installing the extension pack worked perfectly. I'm back up fully upgraded to v4.1.12.
