Good Day Everyone!
I've got a goofy situation that I can't find an answer to & I'm hoping someone can steer me in the correct direction:
When I use VirtualBox (4.1.0 r76795 in OS X 10.6.8 on MacBook Pro Model3,1 2.2 gHz Core2Duo 2gb RAM) it places a log file into my application folder. Each time I use VB, another log file is added. It isn't in the VB folder, just in the root of the application folder.
Where is it supposed to go? How do I get it to go there?
Thanks!
Paul

What is the exact name of this "log file"?

Please check if there's a ticket open for this already on the public bug tracker, and if not, create one.

Re: Log Files In Random Locations
@michaln,
These are the VBoxSVC files and not the guests actual log file, that are being stored on the host. I have them in my ~/.VirtualBox main folder as I suspect everyone does in the appropriate location.
Are you saying this is not normal?

It's may be "normal" but it's wrong. The /Applications folder is not the OS X equivalent of ~/.VirtualBox.Perryg wrote:@michaln,

To be clear, the files are supposed to be generated, but they should not be under /Applications on OS X.

Re: Log Files In Random Locations
I'm a little confused. These 3 files are the only ones in Applications folder. I did a search of the computer (both partitions) and there are no more of these files. I've opened, used and closed the VM 4 or 5 times since these log files were generated. The computer's been re-booted a couple of times. (Not sure if any of that matters.)
I tried to remember what I was doing with the VM at the times indicated & IF I remember correctly, I was trying to get the VM to see my USB DVD drive.
Here is a copy of what is in one of them (They are all the same except for the time stamp in line one):
Log created: 2012-03-24T12:55:03.461015000Z
Executable: /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxSVC
this=00813060 mUniState=9
I tried searching the manual and this forum, but managed to confuse myself. What are they for & when are they generated?
Thanks Very Much! (Again)

Re: Log Files In Random Locations
Paul,
The files you are seeing are normal but michaln is saying that they should not be stored in the application folder, which I agree with by the way.
What he is saying is you should open a ticket at bugtracker so it can be corrected in a future version.
I did a quick check and did not find an open or closed ticket for this so just create a new ticket.
You may actually refer to this topic at bugtracker to help explain your concerns. The files actually help in determining where an error occurs but the actual VBox.log* file is the main file needed to track down errors in the program or the execution of the guest.

Re: Log Files In Random Locations
Thank you PerryG & Michain
I submitted a bug ticket. (Hopefully I did it correctly.)
Since I don't see new versions of these files being created, I'm curious. What are they used for & when are they created?
Thanks,
Paul
