The log appears normal - same as my own XP VMs, which all have working AC'97 sound. Have you checked for muted sound inside the guest?

@Justin,
From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.
Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

Code: Select all
Audio: enabled (Driver: DSOUND, Controller: AC97)
According to this you have it set properly as far as VirtualBox is concerned. So it has to be an issue with the guest. If you open the device manager and have it scan for changes, does it show a new device? If not look in the audio section and see if there is any drivers loaded. (see screen shot) Is this a full retail package of Windows XP or something that you downloaded off the Internet?

Run Control Panel, Add Hardware, let it scan for new hardware. A kosher XP setup should have native support for AC97 audio.

Well, the log shows that the VM is working, so I guess you had better contact Microsoft for tech support.
