VirtIO: Slow performance between bridged VMs

Hello

I have a setup running a couple of Win7 VMs on a Win7 host. I originally used the Intel PRO/1000 MT virtual NICs, but switched to VirtIO a couple of weeks ago. Both VMs are bridged.

Occasionally I need to share files between the VMs, using a tradional Windows File share on one of the VMs. Today I noticed the performance accessing files was really bad, probably after changing to VirtIO. I then switched back to the Intel NIC on both VMs and the performance got much better.

I have had no performance issues using VirtIO between the VMs and the host or between the VMs and the rest of the LAN.

What is going on here? Is a VirtIO setup not recommended when you need to share files between bridged VMs on the same host?

I use version 4.1.10 of VBox and the latest VirtIO drivers from the Fedora distribution.

Regards
Björn
