Quitting Windows XP from OS X Lion

I launch Windows XP from a .vbox file from Spotlight. If I have previously saved the machine state I am put in to that session. However I can't quit Windows XP at this point unless I use bash to send a kill signal or Force Quit. The quit menu looks like this: http://cl.ly/2H3B3q3E281y2X2U2D01 and if I try and use the shutdown windows from the Start Menu in windows it goes through its shutdown routine and it just hangs.
If I kill it using Force Quit I can start it back up and at that point can save the machine state. So I am in this endless loop of saving the machine state (which I want to be able to do every time) or Force Quitting the app. I have no idea why it seems to do this. Any pointers out there?
