VirtualBox on Mac and Serial Port

Post by MichaelS »

On my Mac OS X 10.6.8 i've installed Virtual Box. I've an USB-Serial-Port-Connector connected; which is on port /dev/tty.usbserial . I've tested it with cutecom and it works. But i can't use this serial port in a virtual machine. I've tried it with the settings: port number: COM1 port mode: Host Device port path: /dev/tty.usbserial

and tried to start the virtual machine, the computer crashes. Has anybody an idea ?

Under Windows as VM Host it's possible; that the linux as guest can use the USB serial port as COM1. (So the USB serial driver from the host system is used); so i think the approach should also work under Mac OS.

Hi MichaelS.
I have a Mac OSX 10.6.8 as host for an XP virtual machine on virtualbox 4.1.18 r78361. I use an USB to serial PL-2303 in the Mac and in the VM with the proprietary drivers. Have configured the VM serial port to use the /dev/tty.PL2303-0000103D which the mac kernel module activates. When launching the VM it stalls. However if I configure the port as "disconnected", the XP VM boots all right, but the program in XP which uses the cable says that "someone" is using the port.

Any idea of what's going on?
