Repeated crash in guest when trying to mount

Hello, everyone,

I'm new here, so go easy on me, please. I'm running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3, and the latest version of VirtualBox (4.1.10). I installed Windows 7 just fine without a hitch, but now, everytime I try and install the Guest Additions, or mount a CD/DVD image, the virtual guest just crashes and beachballs. The only way to exit is to do a Force Quit. This is annoying, because I'm trying to set up a shared folder configuration, and trying to install software via a DVD image on Windows 7, but it just will not work - keeps crashing. Otherwise, I don't detect any issues - Windows 7 works fine.

Some information you may need: I'm running this on a MBP 13" (late 2011), i7, 4GB memory. I did this before reformatting my MBP, and then, it worked just fine - no crashes, so this is new. AFAIK, there are no "odd" settings.

"beachballs" is not a term I'm familiar with, in computing anyway. When posting a report like this it would be nice to have supporting data: screenshot of the error, zipped log file as a message attachment, and a precise description of what happened.

The same is happening to me , im running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 on a MBP 15" i5. Vbox 4.1.10.
Whenever i try to install the guest additions Vbox and the VM both hang up , if i try to manually mount the guestadditions .iso it hangs again , and i have to force quit the application .
the VM has 4gb of ram .
What should i do ? By the way how do i get logs and any other thing required so that this can be solved ?

That doesn't sound the same to me. The OP describes a crash, not a hang.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. VM hangs, and the only way to get out is to do a force quit. So, technically it crashes. The point is, mounting anything causes a hang/crash. It will not work at all from that point.

A crash is when an application terminates suddenly and abnomally, usually with an error message. The famous "Blue Screen Of Death" on Windows is an OS crash. If you terminated the app then it was a normal termination and not a crash. What you had was a hang, which is essentially the opposite of a crash - the app is running and will not stop!

I appreciate that non professionals maybe don't care about accurate terminology, but it's important to get the facts straight when describing a bug.

? Yes, which is why I said so in the words that followed that phrase, which you quoted selectively. As primarily a Windows user myself the BSOD is the most notorious example of a crash that springs to mind.

And: lets keep the sarcasm to a minimum please. I'm trying to be helpful, albeit by drawing on familiar references, and yes - since I'm not a Mac user I may need to have Mac terms explained. I recommend that you too restrict your posts to ones intended to be helpful.

Can we please move forward from the terminology and focus on the problem itself? I think I have made myself clear - was I the one being condescending? If so, sorry if I came across that way. The point is, the VirtualBox guest and program itself hangs/crashes (spinning gear/beachballs), and the ONLY way to quit is to Force Quit. Kind of the same equivalent to pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL in WIndows 7, selecting Task Manager, and doing a Force End Process/End Task.

How do I proceed to find the logs?

Sorry, I was replying to mpack.

For logs, the VirtualBox logs can be found by selecting the guest in the VirtualBox application and then selecting Show Log under the Machine menu. The most recent will be titled VBox.log and then the next three will be progressively older with the oldest being VBox.log.3. Crash logs for applications in OS X can be found in the Console app in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder; they should be under /Library/Logs and there should be a sections called CrashReporter and HangReporter that would have any logs that may have been captured by OS X.

Bad assumption! As a mod I'm obliged to read all posts in all forums. In doing that if I see someone asking for help and not getting any then I'll try to help as best I can. I usually make it clear that I'm doing so as an educated guesser until someone better comes along. You have come along now, so by all means get to it!
