Critical Error at Windows 7 x64 Boot Menu (Text)

Post by Mgamerz »

I attached the VBox png and the log, I truncated some of the midsection since it was like 40KB too big.
(Also a new user so apparently I can't post a link either, but I don't have any so it keeps saying I have a link in here.) I can't seem to find a duplicate post of this.

I am running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise as a host and am also running the same OS as the guest (just installed from ISO).
Anytime I put my guest into the boot menu or attempt to load safe mode this happens. I just upgraded to 4 110 just before this, and I just installed the extension pack too (but it didn't help). I have never had to put it into safe mode but I am testing an unattended install and apparently forgot to make it create me an account so I have to go through safe mode. Though, since I can't (I get the guru mediation error stating critical error and execution has been stopped)... well, you know.

Has anyone else had this problem? Was hoping to see if Windows 8 ran better on this but if it isn't going to work (seems like a lot of performance problems, like now I have can't access USB subsystem).

Also, the filename of the vdi includes x86, because I loaded the wrong disk in the VM and later just changed the name of the VM, it is an x64 installation.

Anyone have any suggestions or should I downgrade?

Also, apparently this forum thinks the word U R L is a U R L.

The attached image below is just an example of when it occurs. It happens anytime it is in the text area, and it's really bad when you boot safe mode and it CRAWLS the list of files it is loading... why is it so slow (even on native too)?

Zip the log file and post the complete file as an attachment

I attached it... not sure why I didn't think of zipping it  .
Err let me recreate another error log that isn't truncated.

Update: It is done

Another Update: Also dies on Windows 8.

First thing I would do is switch the chipset back to PIIX3 instead of ICH9 Located in system properties -> motherboard.
See if that helps.

It would be nice to have a screenshot of the critical error, rather than the boot menu.

This is what the error is, and I did /exactly/ what it said.

Also, I found this under my user account directory:

Code: Select all

Log created: 2012-03-14T15:53:02.430837900Z

Executable: C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBox.exe

Commandline: "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBox.exe" --comment "Windows 7 64 Bit" --startvm fdaa5ba1-0975-4327-803d-5fb71fe83db5 --no-startvm-errormsgbox

fatal error in recompiler cpu: Trying to execute code with memory type addr_code=00000000000af020 addend=000000001a6e2000 at 00000000000afff6. (iHandlerMemType=0x38 iMMIOMemType=0x30)
However, it was made before I upgraded virtualbox this morning so I do not think it is relevant, however it looks like it has to do with the emulation.

Update: Also dies with PIIX3. Used ICH9 since 7 would always crash at the installation step if I didn't have ICH9.

Just read this post as I was about to create my own - phew!

I'm having the exact same problem since upgrading to 4.1.10.

I regularly build new VMs to test different software and have regularly booted Windows 7 guests into safe mode in order to install the WDDM drivers in Guest Additions. Since installing 4.1.10, I get the exact same Guru Mediation (ah, good old Amiga days!) when attempting to boot a brand new Windows 7 32-bit VM into Safe Mode. Same applies if I enable safe mode from msconfig prior to a reboot. No matter what I try, I've been unable to get Windows 7 guest to boot into safe mode.

Interestingly, the error occurs at different points in the process - sometimes the moment I hit F8, sometimes immediately after I select one of the Safe Boot options and sometimes part way through booting into Safe Mode.

Perhaps also relevant, if I restart the VM after it has failed, Windows informs me that the boot failed and gives me recovery options - attempting to select one, or sometimes when selecting one, causes the exact same Guru Meditation error to occur.

Looking forward to finding a resolution to this...

I've just retried this, but running Virtual Box 'As Administrator' - no error while booting into Safe Mode!

Any idea why that might be?

Can the OP try this and see if it resolves the behaviour that they are witnessing?

I already run it as administrator. I downgraded to 4.1.8, and no problems anymore. I have to run as admin or no USB devices show up (this happens on multiple windows 7 x64 computers)
