The two dialogs seem to have been grabbed on two different hosts. Is that the case? What versions of VirtualBox were they each running?

If you want to create an offshoot VM, then I think you may be looking for the linked clone feature of VirtualBox v4.1.x. Otherwise I would create a merged clone of the old immutable base and difference file, make that clone the immutable base of another difference disk.

No, you make a clone of the first differencing disk. This automatically causes the clone to be stand-alone merge of the old differencing disk with the old base. This clone can then be the foundation of whatever you want to do.

Make a clone of a vdi and burn both the clone folder and vdi on to a dvd

but on adding the clone from the dvd and intial the clone there is a error

is the error due to change of the clone folder path on the drive?
