Hi,
how can I access a file which is outside the VM?
I downloaded the guest additions for windows and saved them in my linux file system. But I cannot access the file from within my VM...

Red herring alert. Your question contains a spurious assumption.
In general, for how to access a host file, check in the user manual for "Shared folders" (section 4.3).
But, the Guest Additions are not accessed as a file. The guest additions comes as an ISO, i.e. as a virtual CD. To mount that CD you run the VM and then select Devices|Install Guest Additions... (*). If you have autorun enabled in the guest then installation of the GAs will begin immediately. Otherwise navigate to the CD drive (the virtual one inside the VM, not the host drive), and run the program VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe.
(*) It should not have been necessary to download a copy of the guest additions. A copy of the ISO ships along with the other VirtualBox program files. The "Install Guest Additions" menu item accesses the bundled copy, not the (version?) copy you downloaded.
