You must have clicked on install guest additions. Just dismiss the warning and release the install cd from the virtual cd/dvd drive. Then you will be able to install the guest additions.

thanks for the reply,
Yes you are correct, however, in the VM control panel Ubuntu shows up as "inaccessible" I have no access to it.

Inaccessible means that the guest is in a saved state and not shut down.
Have you actually installed the guest or are yo running it as a live cd?

yes i believe so, and I have been working with it for about 2 weeks now. The problem began as follows: I installed updated software for Ubuntu, and restarted the system, then the display that fit to complete screen did not anymore. I played around with some display settings and it was a bit better, but did not fit to entire screen. I found a possible cure, that told me to go to devices, and click guest devices, when I clicked nothing happened. I gave up, and existed, when I returned to VM, I saw the "inaccessible" under, UbuntuLinux, and in a box next to it the above message.
I am hoping there is a way to manually change a parameter, and get this working.

The Ubuntu guest usually comes with the Ubuntu version of VBox guest additions pre-installed. The best thing to do is make sure that these are removed and install the ones from VirtualBox instead. Use the synaptic package manager to remove the guest additions first and reboot the guest.
Next make sure that the following packages are installed:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential linux-headers-generic
Next you install the guest additions. Click the device menu at the top and select install guest additions. If nothing happens then the guest additions are already mounted. Open the CD-drive in your file manager and verify that it is mounted and if it is open a terminal and run the installer from there as sudo.
Once the guest additions are installed and working you do not use the guests settings to change the screen size. You use the mouse click and drag or the hot-key toggles (host+f) to go in and out of full screen.

Is the discard arrow active at the top?
Can you post a screen shot of the VBox manager?

Look in the VirtualBox VMs folder and inside the folder that has the guest. Post the *.vbox file and the *.vbox-prev file here as an attachment.

It's probably in your home folder. Search for UbuntuLinux.* and see where it is. There you should see both files I asked to see.

You don't see one that ends in vbox? That is not good. You can try to make a copy of the *.vbox-prev and then rename it to *.vbox and see if that works. VirtualBox must be completely shut down for this. What version of VirtualBox are you using by the way?
