External hard drive
I cannot access an external hard drive. It automatically shows up on the apple desktop. I do not get the option when I turn it on as too whether or not I want to attach it to the VM or to OS when I plug it in as anticipated. I also do not see it under devices.
Is there a way to share my OS desktop with the VM, which would make this a lot easier?

Re: External hard drive
You can use Shared Folders instead of this.
But before check, if the VBOX Extension Pack is installed on the host.

Re: External hard drive
I would guess that the extension pack isn not installed. I did install the guest additions inside VB.
How/where is the extension pack and how do I install?
Ii was able to access the external hard drive. At this time, I would like to share my Mac desktop with windows. I tried including the desktop in the shared folders with full access, but none show up.

Re: External hard drive
Look into the User Manual (1.5).

Re: External hard drive
I do not see the extension pack download on the site. Where exactly is this? Specifically the VRDP.

Re: External hard drive
Well, I was able to download that, but nothing happens when I try and install it. The download does not appear to be executable.

Re: External hard drive
Read the link I provided above again. It has the install instructions in it.
You may need to do it from the command line since your host is a MAC. (see the bottom of the tutorial)

OK, I installed that. not sure how I did it, but it worked. I have my mac desktop shared under shared folders. I still cannot see my desktop in windows.

Re: External hard drive
Also, while I am at it, I can't connect to other computers on my network. I have tried several options, none work. I can get the internet, and my local internet connection works, but none of 5 other pcs on the network show up. I have used both ethernet connection and wireless.

Re: External hard drive
OK, I stand corrected, I got the network to work on the wireless connection, but I can't connect via the ethernet connection. Also, regarding the desktop, I can find the mac desktop using windows explorer, but nothing appears on my actual desktop as I thought might happen. Maybe I am expecting too much?

Re: External hard drive
You might want to read Chapter 4.3 Shared folders in your VirtualBox users manual and see if can find what you are missing.

Re: External hard drive
I have read chapter 4.3, and if I understand it correctly, you can only access the Mac desktop as a shared fodder. Has anyone found a way to actually share desktops, like Parallels does, so that you can just drag and drop files from one desktop to the other?

Re: External hard drive
Not supported. If you need native hardware access, its probably better to use dual boot via bootcamp.
