Win XP guest, Win7 host - no sound at all

Post by XZerg »

There's no sound at all in my Win XP guest
Win7 is the host
XP reports that sound device is OK
The sound in win7 works fine.

I see you have neglected to reveal any information at all about the settings you used in the "Audio" section of the VM settings. For an XP guest the audio should be enabled, Host Audio = Windows DirectSound, Guest Audio Controller = ICH AC97 (not HD Audio). Also check that you don't have audio out muted inside the guest.

I have exactly the same settings
Host Audio = Windows DirectSound, Guest Audio Controller = ICH AC97
The sound in the guest isn't muted
Still no sound

I guess that the problem is in the Win7 host
XP guest on XP host works OK

Your first post said that "the sound in Win7 works fine"... but the only explanations for this behaviour that I can think of would involve media players etc also having no sound. Anyway I would check the host audio panel, check for muted or disabled mixer devices, or device driver problems in device manager on the host.

Please attach the log of your winXp guest, perhaps it have got some audio warnings. If there're some warnings perhaps output of
{{{
systeminfo
}}}
on your host in attachment, might be helpful (hot-fixes, or your audio equipment).

Hey people, the quiz show starts again.

Yes, same there. Only "does not work", no details.
