is saving the machine state faster than shutting the machine down via the guest shutdown???

In the time you wait for an answer you could try it at least ten times. :)

Normally the answer is yes. But it depends on the system, the disk speed, autostart progrrams, ram size etc.

So take a clock and try it yourself.

well, I am kinda sick of shutting them down and starting them up all the time... there must be an easier way!

It's probably faster, but that is not the only criteria. Long term reliability is an issue with any PC if you always hibernate and never fully shut it down.
