Dynamic HD not growing?

Hello community,
I have a strange problem. I've had that with WinXP Guest more than a year ago and had something very similar with different Linux guest in the last days.
I created a dynamicly growing disk, let's say 50GB. Installed an OS. Installed some applications (nothing too big).
In the past in WinXP the properties of the disk showed that ~30GB are in use but I get errors, that the disk would not have enough free space to install a software with 100MB. Don't have screenshots or exact error messages, sorry... "long" time ago. Maybe it was something completly different, but I remebered that when the next happened:
Now I have something very similiar on Linux (Ubunt, CentOS, ...). I start an installer and it dies after a second telling me that my /tmp hasn't enough free space to extract tempfiles for the installation. df -h /tmp shows me 1,7G free space. I can install the software on a physical computer with lesser free space in /tmp. So what's the problem?
I don't know what the problem might be. I had the idea, that maybe something in the allocation of the dynamic disk space is not working properly (the physical HD of the host has >100GB free space). But I guess that the forum would be full of complains about that, wouldn't it?
Any suggestions?
Best regards,
Sascha
