Problem with iPhone USB device driver in Virtual Box

Hi All,

I'm using ubuntu 11.04 in my dell laptop.

I installed VirtualBox OSE from the ubuntu repository and installed Windows 7 in it.

I have two questions.

1) When i connect my iPhone in Laptop's USB port ubuntu recognizes it automatically. But in virtual box Win 7 it doesn't get detected automatically. I have to manually right click the USB device connectivity icon on the VirtualBox status bar to enable it.

2) When it tried to install the USB device driver software it failed saying that "Device driver software was not installed successfully".

Anybody having the same issue? Can you please tell me how to resolve it?

USB2 devices can't be used in VirtualBox until the extension pack is installed.

Thanks for your quick reply.
Is there any specific packages available for VirtualBox OSE.
Because the link you have given is pointing to VirtualBox 4.1.8.

There is no such separate product any more as "VirtualBox OSE". The main application is open source under GPL. The proprietary stuff (including USB2 support) now comes as an extension pack plugin.

You would however be well advised to download both main app and extension pack from the link I gave you, as their versions need to match. The one in the Ubunto repository may not be the latest version, the one from here is.

Thanks again mpack.

I found out the version of Virtual Box as 4.0.4 (Refer Screenshot) and installed the corresponding Ext Pack also with sudo VMManage etc.,

But still when i connect a thumb drive in my laptop, it is not detected automatically.

Manually clicking the USB Device in the above said manner (ie., in my actual question) failed with the same error.

If i want to install 4.1.8 should i remove the OSE package? Will it create any problem?

How to get a USB device working is a FAQ and as such has been answered many, many times. If you google for "USB site:forums.virtualbox.org" I'm sure you will find some of the previous answers useful. Do not use internal search, as that does not like three letter words.

Well. I have some critical issues here.
Here is what i did.

I removed VirtualBox OSE from ubuntu repo. Downloaded 4.1.8 deb and installed it.
Uninstalled the old ext pack and installed the pack for 4.1.8.

When i rebooted my Ubuntu 11.04 it is entering into the terminal only mode without any GUI. Is there any way to restore my ubuntu back with GUI mode?

Please help me.

Update : However i uninstalled VirtualBox and reinstalled linux-generic and linux-headers-generic and that fixed my problem.

And one more question. Where should i need to install ext Pack on host OS or Guest OS?

The extension pack adds proprietary features as a plugin (features which include USB2 support). You can install the extension pack by using the VirtualBox GUI on the host: see File|Preferences|Extensions, and note the little "Add Package" icon on the right.

The Guest Additions are should be installed in the guest. These add improved VM experience, such as integrated host/guest mouse cursor, simple shared folders etc.
