3D acceleration problems Windows 7 guest

I've had problems with both VMware and VirtualBox. Both same problem. I can run Windows 7 just fine with 3D acceleration disabled. When I turn it on in VBox, I have problems. When I try to go fullscreen the whole VM closes out. If I try to run some programs, it produces various errors. I can't view images, it will flash a couple times then produce a blank white image or continue to say loading. I also get a COM Surrogate error with images. I've installed the guest additions and everything. I'm running VirtualBox 4.1.8 under Ubuntu 11.04. My 3D works great on Ubuntu but under VBox it sucks. If I even try to run solitaire, it will open and it shows the cards being dealt but the whole window keeps flashing quickly. When I close the window my whole VM closes. If anybody has any suggestions or fixes to get 3D to work, it would be greatly appreciated. I really need this to work right.
On a side note just in case it might give more insight into the possible connection between VMware and VirtualBox:
Windows 7 in VMware would produce a very glitchy screen in fullscreen. Also, opening some programs would cause the same glitchy screen. It looks all funky with strange colored objects, ghost windows would show up (windows I had opened and closed moments earlier would appear but I can't interact with them), half of the screen sometimes switches with the other half. It's to the point I can't do anything because the screen is so messed up.
