Win XP guest on Win 7 Host

Hello,

I have copied the .vmi file of Windows XP from one virtual machine. I want to create a new virtual machine using the copied .vmi file. I created the new VM on a Windows 7 host. I pointed the VM to the .vmi as the hard drive for Windows XP. However it won't start. I get the following error:

Code: Select all

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Win XP.

File not found. (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}
I googled the errors and found a tutorial in the virtualbox wiki called Migrate_Windows. However, it appears to be for a Linux host. The other error led to some unsolved threads in this forum. I feel like I'm on a wild goose chase, so hopefully someone can confirm that I'm on the right path here.

So what exactly is the problem? Do I need to modify the registry of the original virtual machine to relax the IDE checks using MergeIDE.zip? Are there any tutorials/ how-tos for windows hosts & guests?

If the version of VirtualBox was => 4.0 you can move the guest by copying the entire guest folder to the other machine and then dbl clicking the *.vbox file in that folder.
Do you mead VDI instead of VMI?

Thanks Perryg, I gave that a shot but it still fails with the same error.

Any clue what I need to do to get this blasted machine running?

edit- I forgot to mention that I checked to make sure I was running the most recent version of virtualbox. I also made sure I had the extension pack installed.
And yes, I meant .vdi file.

The error message is telling you that a file it expects to see has been deleted, moved or renamed since it was registered with VirtualBox. Migration issues are irrelevant, so it sounds like you are looking for overly complicated explanations for a simple problem.

Please show the contents of your VM folder (if the needed .VDI is not already in this folder, then move it there). Also, post your VMs .vbox file as a zipped attachment.
