I can't connect to my VPN in Ubuntu guest OS. The network adapter indicator isn't really showing any green or orange circles on it so that may be the problem? Someone help me it's really annoying me :-( thanks.

Post the results of the following from the guests terminal
lspci
ifconfig -a

From the host:
From the hosts terminal type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Sometimes the VPN ends up connecting, and other times it doesn't. (It's an openvpn VPN)

Perhaps you can explain what it is you are trying to achieve.
You said that you could not connect to the Guests VPN? How are you trying to connect to the guest via VPN?
Now you say it works sometimes. What is the difference when it connects and when it does not?

What I'm trying to do is get my the VPN INSIDE of the Guest OS to connect. At the moment it keeps saying it has timed out. Most of the time it says that, and then other times, it actually connects. It's very spontaneous. I don't know why it isn't.

It works outside the OS on the Host, but not inside the OS. There is no orange or green circle next to the network icon at the bottom of the virtual OS window so I would guess that is the problem but I'm not too sure.

It says "The VPN connection failed because the connection timed out." ALL THE TIME. It's frustrating :(.

Where are you trying to connect from? Are you trying to connect from the host to the guest, or are you trying to connect to the guest from some other PC?
Why are you using NAT for the guests network?

What? I'm trying to connect to anonine VPN... It's not between computers it's to a server; an openVPN server...

I'm using NAT because bridged networking doesn't work...

Ok so the fact that it works occasionally indicates it is not probably a VirtualBox issue. I would use wireshark or some other program that can tell you why the connection is failing. You need to find this out before you or anyone will know what to do.

Wait... I got it working... I put the wrong port into the box and now everything is fine!
