i am experiencing quite some problems using VB on my new PC with a nvidea graphics card
with a windows guest i have no aero and with an ubuntu guest i have no 3D
it seems that nvidea and VB dont play nice with each other
on my laptop wich also has as host Win 7 64bit there are no problems
my laptop has an AMD radeon card
i have updated the drivers to the most recent version 285.26 but no improvement
i think vmware player doesnt have this issue.
is this a bug within VB ?

What are the settings of the Guests and how did you install the Guest Additions? It is pointless to expect 3D to work if you don't have 3D enabled in the VM settings and have not installed the Guest Additions for Windows with 3D enabled during installation and answered the right question on whether you want the classic 3D or WDDM to be installed. Linux Guests may require an additional package before 3D works, though the basic install should already have it.
So, instead of blaming incompatibility between VB and nVidia (I have an nVidia card and it works wonderful), you should compare the settings of the VMs and their inside configuration.

XP and Aero, that's a new one for me. How does one enable that?
For Linux, check my guide on how to install the GA.

sorry for the confusing info
i have also win 7 guest, in wich i have no aero
as far as ubuntu is concerned, i have definitly screwed up the install of the GA
i will redo with the manual in my hand
but i have a hunch that it will resolve nothing
because on my laptop it works fine !
there is something wrong with the nvidea graphics card drivers, i just dont know what
maybe it is only the 560 series ??
i have no clue
thanks for your help anyway

Windows 7 needs to install the GA in normal mode and enable 3D. Then for the question to install the old 3D, answer NO. After a reboot you will have Aero. If you installed the GA in safe mode and answered YES, then uninstall the GA, update DirectX and install the GA again with the proper answer.
I doubt there is a problem with your video card, but if there is one, it's not VB's fault, but nVidia's, as the problem is most likely in the driver.
Btw, it's not nVidea, but nVidia, double i, no e.

well sasquatch, i followed all you advice
install GA in ubuntu with the manual in my hand, went flawless
result is slightly different, that means: i can enable 3D in host, but when the VM boots up all contact with VB disappears
the keys HOST+home and HOST+F no longer work and the mini toolbar is gone to, hovering over it with the mouse does not help
the only way to end the VM is from within ubuntu itself
anyone else have this problem ?

Post the log file (as an attachment) of the last time you started the guest (log or log0)
Also make sure you are not in scaled mode. use the host+C toggle to check.

Thank you,
I will post the log file in ZIP tonight
I did some more testing
I also build a new VM Win 7 64bit, same as my host, to test
Its exactly the same as with ubuntu
So I can use aero but from the moment the VM lands on the desktop all contact with VB disappears.
It is also very unstable, sometimes VB crashes on terminating the VM.
If I disable aero, then it works OK, even with 3D and 2D enabled in the host
I also stripped down the host, meaning I deleted everything from the host exept VB off course and the nessesary drivers to make win 7 work.
To make sure that there are no conflicts in the host.
Thanks for all your help

by the way, i have never ever used the scale mode before, i always use the fullscreen mode with HOST+F

It looks like you have installed the d3d drivers instead of the wddm drivers. How did you install the guest additions? Be exact.

really?
this i do not understand
i installed the GA in normal mode. upon the question i answered NO
when i check in device manager it shows under graphics adapter the WDDM driver and NOT the virtualbox graphics adapter
if you are right, how is it possible that i do get aero in my VM even if it does not work smoothly ?
with the D3D drivers that should not be possible ?
the mystery deepens...

I said it looks like, but if what you said is true than that is not the reason.

another thing,
if you are wright, how then is it possible that i have 3D in my windows guests ?
wich works very well.
i am sure i did not install GA in safe mode, so when i install D3D driver in normal mode, i should not have 3D in the guest, wright?
i learned that the painful way a few years back when i first used VB whit a XP guest
am i missing something here ?
