Unable to use mouse or host keys in VirtualBox

Post by ericmagidson »

To begin, I am new to VirtualBox and have downloaded and installed v4.1.8 on my Windows 7 Prof 64bit base OS. I have installed a couple different virtual machines and in all cases I have been unable to use any of the host key configurations nor able to use the mouse to send commands. (Example - Machine/Insert Ctrl+Alt+del). I thought perhaps I needed to install the Guest Additional but have been unable to do that as well.

Troubleshooting - I have uninstalled and reinstalled the entire application including extension pack. I have also tried to change the host key to both the Alt Key and Application Key.

PLEASE HELP :)

Thank you in advance.

Make sure that you *HAVE NOT* defined a USB filter for the keyboard or mouse in the guest settings. These are shared resources and will not work if yo have created a filter.

I have not defined any filters at all.

The USB filter is the only thing that I can think of that will cause both the keyboard and mouse to not function unless I am not understanding what you are seeing.
If however the mouse and keyboard do work and it is that none of the functions work properly I would make sure that you do not have special keyboard mappings or hot keys defined in the host. Just a guess at this point. You could post a guests log file (as an attachment) so we can see if it shows anything out of the ordinary.

No this is a clean install with absolutely no customization completed. When I create a new shell for a virtual machine I am unable to go up to machine expand that menu and use any of the functions. Understand that the mouse and keyboard work just fine in and out of the VirtualBox and within a host machine. Once the machine is installed lets say I want to send the Ctrl+Alt=Del command to the virtual machine. I cannot do that either by using the host+del key nor going up to Machine and clicking on the command there. Hope this makes more sense. Basically that function and installing guest additions will not work.
