hi everyone,

i have experiensed a strange problem

i have a VM XP SP3 x86 running on VB 4.1.8 on Win 7 64bit host

i only had one snapshot wich i deleted yesterdag

In the VB GUI it all went fine. It shows no more snapshots

but when i look at the snapshot folder there is still the snapshot VDI off about 3 GB and a smaller SAV file

What to do next ?

can i delete the snapshot folder manually ?

what has caused this issue ?

thanks for help

The SAV is from saving the guest instead of shutting down. I would make sure the guest is properly shut down before doing anything.
The snapshot should have deleted itself, but without knowing how you did this I would be extremely cautious or risk loosing the guest completely.
And lastly never delete a folder that was created by the application.

Other things are stored in the Snapshots folder besides actual snapshots. For example if you create a linked clone, or a VM with an immutable drive, then the base drive image is frozen and the VM uses a difference image - stored in the snapshots folder. We have no way of knowing whether the file you see is needed or not, without knowing more about the VM. Posting the .vbox file (as a zipped attachment) would help towards that.

thank you for the very fast answer

i did not create clone of anykind

the VDI is a normal one, not immutable

indeed i shutdown the VM before deleting the snapshot

i did this from within the guest itself with the shutdown button

once shutdown i deleted the snapshot from the GUI

i noticed nothing out of the ordinary

tonight i will try uploading the VBOX file

thanks

hi guys,

as promised the uploads for you to look at

i did some research myself and i can point in the right direction

it has something to do with a data vdi i made called DISK1.VDI

it is still attached to a snapshot of another VM of windows 7 32bit

i know this because i had MOVED the two snapshot files to another location to see what happens

and guess what happened: VB sayd that i cant access DISK1.vdi anymore

so i tried deleting the snapshot from WIndows 7 VM on wich it is attached but off course that doesnt work

i tried deleting disk 1.vdi but that doesnt work either

what now ?

Here is a modified version of the .vbox file, which you should use to replace your existing "Windows XP SP3 32.vbox" file. The other two files you supplied are not important. VirtualBox should of course be shut down when you replace one of its files.

WARNING: You have been cross connecting hard disks from different VMs, and I do not know to what extent. There is a possibility that another VM (e.g. that Win7 VM) is relying on the media registry entries I just deleted, and that VM will not run. So, be prepared to backtrack.

thank you,

for your work and understanding

i will download and check it out

indeed i was cross attaching the VDI to different VM's

that is what got me into trouble

i am trying to backtrack now

luckely no important files were on the VDI

i will let you know how it goes
