I have the 4.1.8 Guest Additions installed in my Win7 VM but when I launch VirtualBox I get prompted with an offer to download 4.1.8 guest additions because it thinks that I am still at the earlier level. How can I get this to stop?

I decided that since VirtualBox 4.1.8 thought I did not have the latest Guest Additions, I 'd let it download the latest and install it. Did that. My VM for Win7 still works and now starting VirtualBox doesn't give me the warning. So problem solved, but I guess that with a newer version you should install the additions to VirtualBox itself as well as in the VMs?

Hello,
Are you sure that VirtualBox asked you about the Guest Additions and not the Extension Pack?
I am absolutely not a specialist of this, so I might say something completely wrong, but I think that you only need the Guest Additions when you are actually in the Guest… It is probably completely useless for your Host.
I sometimes get a message when I first launch VirtualBox after updating it to a newer version (maybe everytime these days but I'm not sure), and it's about the Extension Pack. So usually, it goes like this: launch VirtualBox, VB tells me there's a new version, I update, re-launch VB, VB tells me I need the Extension Pack, I download it, re-launch VB, switch on my Guest, download the Guest Additions and re-start the Guest!
It's a little long, but at least evrything is up to date!
So maybe this is what you got too… which would explain why the message didn't show up anymore, if it is the Extension Pack that you actually installed! ^^
