Windows 7 Display

I am running a Windows 7 x64 guest on a Ubuntu 10.04 x64 host system. Virtualbox is updated to 4.1.8. I have ran into a strange issue where my VM display is stuck showing the Windows logo and "Starting Windows", but the system does actually boot up. I had enabled RDP within Windows previously, and can access that with no problem. This started with my update to 4.1.8. I have installed the 4.1.8 guest additions in hopes that it would fix the problem, but it has not. I downgraded back to 4.1.6, both Virtualbox and GA, but the problem still remains. Has anyone ever heard of this? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Did you enable 3D and install the GA with Aero 3D support? Then that may be the cause of it. But, the VM should not stop loading, it should actually continue loading, just not show it properly. It should have been fixed though. And I only saw it when I was logging on, where it would say Welcome, or something else you see during the log on process. You can try putting it in saved state and then resume it. That worked for me when I had aero enabled.

The VM does finish starting, and like stated, I can RDP (through windows, not the Virtualbox RDP service), but I can't access the GUI directly. It never even gets to the login window. I did have the 3D portion installed at some point, but it became to much trouble than it was worth (for me anyway) so I don't choose that during the GA install. The problem only happens when I install the GA. If they are uninstalled, then the machine loads fine, and I can access the GUI directly, but then I lose all the benefits of the GA.

Ok, so remove them, disable 3D then install the GA again without 3D enabled during installation.

What does the Manager GUI show (the main VB app with the VM list) in the VM preview? The same screen, or something else? What do you see if you enable boot logging in the Guest?

If possible, please. Attach it as a text document here. It may show us what driver or other file it's failing on. I do see the GA getting loaded and it doesn't pause there, so they should be fine. Maybe a Windows update is the cause of this, that it doesn't work well with the GA and either the GA need to be reinstalled (but you tried that a few times already) or they need to be updated to work properly with the patch.

I will give it a shot, cause I don't want to leave any stone un-turned, but I do want to point out that it was working before with Symantec installed. It will be some what difficult to remove, as it automatically gets installed through our Active Directory domain, but I should be able to get around it.

Same result, still get the same screen as posted before, but can still access the VM through RDP. I turned on boot logging, just to make sure that no Symantec/Norton drivers were being loaded. I didn't see any, but I have pasted it below:

Nothing other than reporting this strange behaviour in the
Bugtracker (separate account needed). Do add a VM log of it to the report, they devs are very picky about that.

I am having perhaps related problem. I can get Win7 to boot and things work OK for a while then display gets messed up. Happens when switching between view modes. Looks like a screen resolution mismatch (horizontal line) or just goes black. Sometimes it looks fine, but does not update until I select a Mac app or other wise poke it and then it updates, but freezes again.
My goal is to run SolidWorks under Windows so I need 3D acceleration. I have latest VB and GA installed in OSX 10.6 host.
