Which option should I use for installing CentOS 5 64bit

Post by pezomatic »

I am trying to install a 64bit version of an Elastix phone system onto a Mac Mini that is running OSX Lion 10.7.

I was able to install the 32bit version (choosing Linux Other as the OS) with no problems but there is no option for Linux other 64bit.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You must start the MAC in 64 Bit Mode. Often discussed, use the search function.

Thanks for pointing out the search feature, I thought that was only for finding facebook friends.

Congratulations, you are up to 5882 posts! Hopefully the other 5881 were more helpful and less snarky!

Before posting I searched the forum without any luck. Hence my post.

Thanks again for your help!

Google must be difficult to use. Cant believe it, i gave you the right answer. You only have to search for.

Like http://www.google.com/search?q=mac+os+boot+64+bit+mode

One result is:

http://macperformanceguide.com/SnowLeopard-64bit.html

So my answer was helpfull.

Stefan, from the number of posts that you have responded to I can see that you have been around a while and that you are active contributor to the VirtualBox forum, and I respect that...to a point. What irked me about your response was that it was basically the equivalent of telling a newbie to go RTFM. You made an assumption that I did not search for the answer (which I did) and that was not running my computer in 64bit mode (which I am) and that somehow if I was in 64bit that your response had answered my question (it did not). I'll take responsibility for failing to clearly ask my original question and I will try again.

I have a Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.8. in 64bit mode. I am trying to create a Virtual Box so I can run an Elastix/Asterisk PBX system. The Elastix ISO image is for a 64bit CentOS 5.6 computer. When I try to install it with VirtualBox I do not see any Linux option for CentOS. In the past I have installed the 32bit version of CentOS using the Linux "Other" option. As you can see in my screenshot, there is no Linux 64bit option for “Other” and my attempts to install it with “Other” produces an error message stating that I cannot install the long version of CentOS on my VirtualBox. I see 64 bit options for all the other Linux version (such as RedHat) but none for CentOS. If fact, I have also tried installing CentOS using the RedHat 64bit option but it also failed.

Can someone please tell me if it is possible to install a 64bit version of CentOS with VirtualBox? If so, which install option should I choose? I have attached a screen capture of the VirtualBox popup menu which shows all the Linux options that I have to choose from.

Thanks.

Yes, and I hoped that the Red Hat option would work but sadly it does not.

There should have been a guest log created. Post that (as an attachment) so we can see where the failure is.

Okay, when I get back to the office I will try again and then upload the log file.

Which install option should I be using...RedHat 64bit...Other?

RedHat or Fedora should work, but I would go with RedHat myself as this has always worked for my CentOS installs.
