Any ideas how to fix the incorrect filter settings that are automatically generated for a specific device when its plugged into the host and you do the add filter step to the guest settings? If this fixes all your problems then it implies that the filter settings you were using previously did not match the device

Re: Unable to use USB on windows 7 install
I would add a second filter and compare it to the first to see what is different.

Re: Unable to use USB on windows 7 install
I'm not understanding this, the first filter is all empty, how do I see what it uses once the device is plugged in? The automatically created device specific filter looks correct from all I can glean about the device (no OS/X driver for it) when I create the filter from the VM settings USB tab.mpack wrote:I would add a second filter and compare it to the first to see what is different.
Thanks for your help, I don't have this issue at all on Linux hosts, only my OS/X hosts, I've never needed a Windows host so I don' t know if it crops up there or not.
On the Linux hosts I can just plug in the USB device and select it from the Devices->USB menu and then it unmounts (if Linux has a driver for it) and then installs, I've not needed any USB filters since about Virtualbox2. I'm not a heavy Virtual box user but it nicely solves some problems.
Edit: I should add I've seen this issue on Linux and WinXP guests only on OS/X host. The empty filter fix in this thread has worked for the Linux guest, I've not had a chance to test it on the XP guest yet.

Re: Unable to use USB on windows 7 install
The "empty filter fix" is a workaround, not a fix. Having an empty filter can be a problem for anyone that needs certain USB devices to remain owned by the host.
The "first filter" means the originally created (non-blank) one as posited in this thread. If that doesn't work then create a second filter to check for differences - who knows, perhaps it's the device which has non-fixed values in certain fields.

I was having the same problem with any usb device. Found a solution for myself, hope it helps.
1. Remove usb devices from host
2. With guest shut down, remove all devices from USB filters. Added new default filter (ie. Did not select device from host. Note: one generic filter was enough to manage multiple devices in the guest OS. Ran HTC Incredible 2 and external hard drive simultaneously with no problems.)
3. Enable USB 2.0. You must have the ext. pack to enable this option.
4. Select 1 CPU from system> proccessor menu.
5. Click "OK"
6. Boot guest.
7. Plug in usb device. Drivers should load automatically.
Good luck!
I had same issue with my Windows7 (64-bit) host and XP(32-bit) guest. Followed above steps however it did not work first. Then I un-installed all entries from my guest XP from following location:
"Control Panel>> System>> Hardware >> Device Manager >> Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
And repeated above 7 steps. Now I could use my USB device inside guest XP.

Never thought of cleaning out the Guest - good idea! Will have to "play" with that.Abid Pir wrote:I un-installed all entries from my guest XP from following location:

Thank you very much, you solve my problem under Windows XP (not running 7)fhinz wrote:Running Mac 10.7.2 host with Windows 7 SP1 guest. VB v. 4.1.8 with Ext Pack 1. VBManage lists match those already posted.

Re: Unable to use USB on windows 7 install
Hi there,
I want to share my experience about this issue.
I have Mac OS X 10.8.1 (Mountain Lion) host , VirtualBox version 4.2
My Guest OS is Windows 7 64 bit Professional with 2 CPU assigned.
I have WDDM driver installed in guest OS.
I have the same problem with USB , when I plug in the USB FLASH DRIVE to my Mac , The Windows said USB DEVICE IS NOT RECOGNIZED (ERROR 43)
But fhinz solution is help me.
At the first time I try to remove all USB filter , and add the default USB Filter. And restart the guest OS . This does not work.
So I try to reduce my CPU to 1 CPU , and then try again. It's Work!
Thank you very much fhinz.
P.S.
When I have 2 CPU , I cannot play game , farm frenzy 3 , ... , in Windows 7 with WDDM driver installed. But after I reduce CPU to 1, I can play it.
