Unable to use USB on windows 7 install

Post by geestring »

I'm using osx as a host and running windows 7 virtually. I originally had version 4.1.6 and when I plugged in usb devices it did not show up in the device manager, however it would prompt me that the drivers could not be installed. I now installed 4.1.8 with the oracle extension and got a better result. The usb device shows up in the device manager but with a yellow symbol signifying that its not working. I also get no noise when you plug in a usb device.

Keep on mind, I'm plugging in simple devices like a thumb drive etc... any ideas?

Also, I've read that the OSE version does not have USB, so could that be it? I downloaded vb from the official website.

Hello,

I have the same problem. I can't connect a usb key or usb drive: I eject it in osx host, choose it in usb devices. It doesn''t appear and is not checked in the usb devices list. Then, If I try again, I got a NS_ERROR_CALL and a few times after, I get no usb devices listed..

Moreover, I can't shutdown the machine, I get a NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE) (but I can untill windows is started..)

Here are the outputs:
MacBook-Pro:~ joseph$ VBoxManage list extpacks

One last thing:
I can shutdown the machine before windows starts but if has started, I can't anymore even if I try to reset before.

@eagleamon,

At the present MAC Lion guest is not really supported. It works or it does not. Please read http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=31104

One thing I have picked up is *if* you have more than 1 processor enabled USB does not work. I don't know this for certain but that is what I read here.

@geestring,
You simply need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage and type those commands in a command window.

Sorry I have not been clear, I have a Win7 64 guest on Lion host.

One more thing, I have a win xp 32 machine also and, whereas everything was working on SL, I can't mount some usb device (keys, harddrive).
For example, a usb key:
- I plug -> mounted on Lion
- eject (even eject device in disk utility) -> disappears but is listed in usb devices in virtual machine
- I click to connect to virtual machine -> I got a ACCESSERROR

Running Mac 10.7.2 host with Windows 7 SP1 guest. VB v. 4.1.8 with Ext Pack 1. VBManage lists match those already posted.

I was having the same problem with any usb device. Found a solution for myself, hope it helps.

1. Remove usb devices from host

2. With guest shut down, remove all devices from USB filters. Added new default filter (ie. Did not select device from host. Note: one generic filter was enough to manage multiple devices in the guest OS. Ran HTC Incredible 2 and external hard drive simultaneously with no problems.)

3. Enable USB 2.0. You must have the ext. pack to enable this option.

4. Select 1 CPU from system> proccessor menu.

5. Click "OK"

6. Boot guest.

7. Plug in usb device. Drivers should load automatically.

Good luck!

Thank you so much fhinz you helped me out of this nightmare !

I'm running an OSX 10.7 (lion) host with a windows 7 guest. Some of my usb devices were maked as available, even captured for some of them, but there were no way to get one detected in windows 7 !

I did everything exept the default filter + plug usb device in only on vm running. Those two last steps, documented nowere else I guess, made it work for me !

Thank's again.

A blank (generic) filter means that any device plug into the host, after the guest is running, will be grabbed by the guest. Not always a good thing. If this fixes all your problems then it implies that the filter settings you were using previously did not match the device.
