Printer Install Step-by-Step

Post by drmtesta »

HI all,
I just started useing VB and I have XP guest installed running Win 7 64 as host. I want to install an HP 1102 W printer through USB. I add it as a filter under the USB tab and then go to install. It gets about half way and just hangs. I'm using version 4.1.8 but I don't know much else about which specific type I have.

I really need to be able to print or the VB won't be very helpful. Am I setting up the printer correctly? Also, the printer can be used wirelessly, does that make a difference?
Thanks,
Mark

Don't set up the printer inside the guest. Set it up on the host, enable network sharing of it, and access the share from any guest that needs it. You need to use an appropriate networking mode inside the guest - that would be "Host Only" or "Bridged". The details of setting up a network share depends on the choice of host and guest OS, but that's standard networking stuff, not really VirtualBox - google is your friend on that.

Thank you. So the "Nat" setting is not the correct one on the guest then. I'll give it a try.

Working Great!! Thank you!!
One other quesiton. I have an optical scanner that I need to connect. I can't network it I don't believe. It is attached to a serial to USB converter. I thought I could set up a filter, and click on it, but that doesn't work. All the usb periferals try to reinsall. Plus the mouse quits. Any resource available which talks about how to connect USB devices?

I got the scanner working too. ..just needed to set the serial port to Host Device and it worked like a charm.
I have the manual for VB, but are there any other good resources on using it?

You have the manual plus this website, which is the official user forum (which some input from the devteam too). Be wary of accepting VBox advice from external sites as the advice is often horribly out of date - if not completely wrong.
