Much slower under File Vault (Snow Leopard)

Hi all,
Recently I encrypted my home directory on my OS X Snow Leopard laptop using File Vault. As my Virtualbox guest instances are stored in my home directory, the VDIs were also encrypted.
My guest instances have now slowed dramatically down. Any suggestions (other than moving the guest instances out of my home directory)?
Has anyone compared running Virtualbox guest instances in Snow Leopard's File Vault vs Lion's File Vault 2?
