VB 4.1.8, Linux kernel 3.1 success on Suse 12.1 64bit

Post by sid1950 »

Just finished installing Office 2007 in a Win XP Pro vm.

The host VBox 4.1.8 is running on an openSuse 12.1 64bit host with Kernel 3.1.0-1.2-desktop x68_64. GUI is heavily customised KDE 4.7.2. Hardware is a refurbished Dell Optiplex GX620 upgraded with a Pentium D 950 3.2GHz dual core, 4Gb DDR2, nVidia GeForce 94ooGT 1Gb, and 160Gb HDD. I'm using the nouveau Gallium 7.11 driver for the nVidia card as it seems to work better with my twin Dell 2007FP 20" monitors.

I've attached a screenshot.

I had a lot of trouble with VB before this as I had tried to set the virtual CPU to 2 cores with IO APIC on. The whole thing ran very slow. This VM is set to 1 core, 1024MB ram, 128MB display memory, and runs as fast as if it was on a native XP machine. In fact it is faster than XP Pro on my Inspiron 1300 (Pentiuim M 1.6Ghz, 2Gb DDR2). So far today it is proving quite stable, starts up and shuts down quickly, and means that I can do my website testing without having to boot up another machine.

Now I am going to add VBox 4.1.8 to my Inspiron 1521 laptop (AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-50 1.6GHz dual core, 4Gb DDR2) which is running Ubuntu 11.04. I'll post the results of that too. :D
Best wishes

Sadiq
