I am suddenly unable to start any of my virtual machines. I'm getting the error message:

Failed to open a session for the Virtual Machine Windows 7
Failed to Load VMMRO.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE)

Then, when clicking on details, the following appears.

Did you recently update OS X or update the VirtualBox application to a newer version?

I launched Virtualbox a few days ago and it asked me if I wanted to upgrade extension pack. I said yes, and then strangely, this seemed to mess things up and cause the error. I tried re-installing the app but it didn't help.

Now when I run VB on my cloned backup drive, it works fine but copying it and all my virtual machines over to my internal drive doesn't make the error message go away.

What do I need to do to get rid of this problem?

My guess is that the permissions of your VirtualBox folders have been changed. Have you tried doing a Repair Disk Permissions using the Disk Utility application? You'll also want to make sure that the VirtualBox application and the Extension Pack are at the same version number.
