audio on Windows 98

I'm on a Linux host running a Windows 98 mechine and I need audio for games. My card is a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS I've tried *this tutorial but some images are no longer hosted and the explanation is lacking. I don't get a list of devices in the 'Add New Hardware' wizard. So how can I get audio working? Thanks anyone.

Also, does VirtualBox have a CPU speed control? My game is running rampantly...

A VM uses only simulated hardware, so your host's actual sound card type is irrelevant. Your Win98 VM should be configured to use SoundBlaster 16, and you'll probably now need to use "Add new hardware" to get the guest to recognize it.
No, there is no way to control CPU speed in a Win98 guest.

Sound: use "Sound Blaster 16" in VBox settings (as "mpack" said)
Timers: actually vbox allows to control some timers..
read "9.13.2. Accelerate or slow down the guest clock"

... I'm not quite why changing the guest clock should affect CPU speed? (AIUI "clock" in the context of s9.13.2 means the simulated RTC, not the main m/b crystal).

CPU speed can be limited (CPU exec cap in vbox GUI)

In Machine > Settings > Processor there is and option for number of CPUs, which I have set to one.
I don't see any exec cap setting.

Okay I'm getting closer. I tried the command
Code: Select all
VBoxManage modifyvm "Win98Machine" --cpuexecutioncap <10>
and got
Code: Select all
syntax error near unexpected token `10'
then tried removing the <>
Code: Select all
VBoxManage modifyvm "Win98Machine" --cpuexecutioncap 10
and it gave me a usage summary. What am I typing wrong?

The angle brackets should not be present, hence I see nothing wrong with your second attempt, assuming the VM name is exactly correct.
In any case I doubt that a simple cap on CPU time will produce the linear slowdown in execution speed that you are looking for - but I've been wrong before.

cpuexecutioncap:
vm->settings->system->processor

I'm sorry but it's just not there. And the option isn't listed in the usage summary. Maybe I don't have the right version of VirtualBox?

Doh. Guess I expected the debian repository to have the latest ver.

latest ver = Oracle and/or Debian-unstable;
