Updated from 4.1.6 to 4.1.8 and then tried to install VB Extensions and received the following error. Uninstalled VB and tried to install from scratch. Still seeing the error. Repaired permissions, and still seeing the error.

Mac OS X 1.7.2. on a 2008 iMac.



Failed to install the Extension Pack /Users/Shared/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.8-75467.vbox-extpack.

The installer failed with exit code 1: VBoxExtPackHelperApp: error: The group is not a system group and it has write access to '/Applications/VirtualBox.app'.

I have the same problem. You're also told that your previous version is rl0 (from memory) and asked if you're sure that you want to downgrade.

I reinstalled 4.1.6 and found its extension pack still accessible.

I'm wondering if this is related to the fact that I changed the default directory for my VMs.

I'm getting the same error but my backup on my bootable clone is working fine. Yet, when I try to copy it to my main hard drive, I get the error. Very strange. I really need to access Windows 7 to run some Windows Apps. Not sure how to get past this. All help appreciated.

I waited until 4.1.10 was released but I had the same problem. I then tried to remove the old extension pack from the settings page but found an exclamation mark against its entry. After a backup, I uninstalled VirtualBox and then installed 4.1.10 from scratch. The extension pack installed with no trouble and I was pleased to find that my VM was found and recognised and that it still worked.

The only unusual thing I know about my system is that I have set the environment variable that controls the location of my VirtualBox data. I have that pointing to a folder in a non-system partition.

That shouldn't matter. The extension pack is program code, not user data, so doesn't need to be anywhere near your user data folders.

As an aside, and possibly a pain in the a for you to change now - but if all you wanted to do was have your VMs on a different drive then you didn't need the environment variable for that. You could have left the tiny VirtualBox.xml in its default location (that's what the environment variable changes), and just adjusted the path to existing VMs. All VM paths are stored in VirtualBox.xml. The default path for new VMs is set in File|Preferences.
