USB thumbdrive problems

I have 2 VMs a XP pro SP3 and Vista. The host is Vista machine.
I'm having problems with mounting USB thumbdrives in the guest systems. On the Vista VM, the USB device will not even be recognized (everything works fine on the host). On the XP, the thumbdrive gets recognized and mounted, but double clicking on the drive in My Computer results in an "Access denied" error.
I"m able to access the drive from command prompt and by typing the drive letter in Explorer.
Both VMs have Vbox Additions installed. Any ideas??
