Panic! Installed 4.1.8, Now Guest Machine Inacessable -Help?

Post by EvanAlaska »

Hi Everyone

I installed 4.1.6 on a Vista 64 machine just over a month ago.

Today I installed 4.1.8 over that.

Now I am in a panic because it shows my Guest as "Inaccessable." It took me hours to get all the updates installed on my guest machine and I'm hoping I don't have to redo all that work.

Here is the an error message I am getting:

Cannot attach medium 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' {c2fd9e07-e8fd-4bc3-bed0-d30156cc4b82}: medium is already associated with the current state of machine uuid {4025e5b1-3c03-497b-8fea-c0106eab6ebd}!.
Result Code:
VBOX_E_OBJECT_IN_USE (0x80BB000C)
Component:
Medium
Interface:
IMedium {53f9cc0c-e0fd-40a5-a404-a7a5272082cd}

Can any one please help me? I really need to access that guest machine without having to recreate it from scratch!

This usually happens if you upgrade while the guest is not shut down (saved state). Was the guest shut down?

Thank you for replying so quickly :-) !

Yes, I did shut down the guest before installing the 4.1.8 upgrade or the guest additions again after the upgrade.

Any other ideas?

Is there anything I can do to get my guest machine back functioning this morning?

Look in the guest settings storage and see if there is anything attached to the CD/DVD. If so set the CD/DVD to empty (on the right side of the pull down)

Thanks again, but I'm not sure how I can do that. My settings icon and option on rt-click menu are grayed out. (The Guest is listed as "Inaccessible"

I do see some settings I can try to change on the File >> Preferences tool.. for instance, I could try removing the extensions package.

If these things wont work, can I roll back the 4.1.8 install so I can get back to using that machine today? I left some work on there I need :(.

I did find the Virtual Media Manager, and there are two .isos under the CD/DVD Images tab, but both say they are not attached. One is the VboxGuestAdditions ISO, and the other is the Vista Install Disc Image...artifacts I think of when I first tried installing... I could remove them if that would help.

I am not sure a rollback will help but you can try that. But first, in the VirtualBox main manager do you see the abort icon at the top? is it colored or grayed out?

There is no "Abort" Icon anywhere I can see. Not in Oracle VM Virtual Box Manager. Cloest thing to that is a "Discard" icon, which is grayed out.

I tried removing the VBoxGuest Additions and got this message:

Failed to close the CD/DVD image C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso.

The object is not ready.

OK you have two things that you need to do.

1) reboot the host and see if it will release the CD. If so then everything is good to go.

2) failing that you will need to edit the *.vbox file and remove the line that has 53f9cc0c-e0fd-40a5-a404-a7a5272082cd
MAKE SURE that you backup this file first!

Keep in mind that while I can't remove those CD .ISOs, they are not "attached."

One other thought, when I set up the virtual machines, I did it on the F Drive, not the C. Could the upgrade have lost the path information?

I'm really panicing now...If I have to reinstall windows and updates on a new machine...it's going to take all day...and I have to get started on it.

If there is some way to recover from the error:

Cannot attach medium 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' {c2fd9e07-e8fd-4bc3-bed0-d30156cc4b82}: medium is already associated with the current state of machine uuid {4025e5b1-3c03-497b-8fea-c0106eab6ebd}!.

Or to roll back my upgrade to 4.1.8, I really need to know.

You didn't sound all that optomistic :-(

Do you think this is hopeless? Is there a faster way to chat? I'd call you :-)

Thanks again, our messages crossed in the email...

I will try rebooting the host again.

Where is the *.vbox file to be found? I know the guest has a .vdi file and being 30 gigs it would take a while...

The VB guests are always on the drive that you install VirtualBox on. They are not stored where you put the guests.
If you rebooted and that did not help I (if it were me) do what I said above before trying the rollback.
If that fails then put the backed up *.vbox file back and try the rollback.

The *.vbox file is in the same folder that has the *.vdi if you installed with version 4.* of VirtualBox
