Hardware requirements. Xeon i686 supported?

Post by CootCraig »

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1750 that I am prepping to go into my company's server room. There are dual Xeon i686 processors and 4Gb of memory. I will be using Scientific Linux 6.1 and the main function will be as a Git repository server. The main application OS for the shop is Windows Server 2003. If possible I would like to run a VirtualBox guest Windows 2003 system for development and test. I have experience using VMware player on Windows 7, but this is my first attempt with VirtualBox. I have not been able to get a VirtualBox host VM to start up.

Are the older Xeon i686 processors supported? I don't want to waste more time if it is not.

Thanks.

FYI (to avoid confusion): VMs are referred to as guests, or as VMs. The host is what (er) hosts the VMs.

I can't think of any reason for them not to be supported. Of course without VT-x there will be some features the VMs can't access, e.g. 64bit operation, multiple cores.

Perhaps it would be best if you gave details of error messages etc.

Good to hear. I'll start a thread on the Linux Host group.
