I seem to have got into a mess here. I have read section 4 of the manual and the faq on shared folders, but still not sure what I should be doing.
I set up a shared folder through the menu to share a my dropbox folder (called Dropbox) on the Mac host to a folder named sf_Dropbox on Ubuntu guest.
Trying to open the folder in Ubuntu tells me I don't have permission to open it. I then read what I thought implied that the both folder couldn't share the same name. I deleted the original folder through the VB menu and set up a new folder in Ubuntu called sf_MacDropBox.
However the original folder is still there and I now cannot access either. I have now removed both from the VB shared folders dialog, but both are still there in Ubuntu. I have tried umounting them (umount command) but I cannot get rid of them.
So I now have two problems, how do I get rid of these folders and how do I get access to a folder.
The instructions suggest that the existing user is added to the vboxsf group when guest addition is installed, which i have now installed three times in the hope of fising this. I have also looked at Users in the Ubuntu system, but cannot see a vboxsf group to see who is in it.
I would very much approeciate some help.
Many thanks,
Graham

Re: shared folder ubuntu 11.10
Ubuntu 11.10 does not have the group menu like previous versions and you need to add the users name using CLI.
This is done on the guest using the guests username:
Replace <your username> with the name you use to log in. Type your user password when prompted.
Be sure to log off and back in to finalize the change in permissions
Note: this only works if the guest additions are installed (on the guest)
This is done on the guest using the guests username:
Code: Select all
sudo usermod -aG vboxsf <your username>Be sure to log off and back in to finalize the change in permissions
