[invalid] Disk full, Glitchy bug

Post by scaleblue »

i was in the process of parition/installing something when i clicked cancel. it said "canceling..."
5 mins later it still said "canceling..." so i quit virtual box now my disk says its full, all 250 gb ,....
its not full. I had 220+ gb left until this bug occurred.
I cant partition, I can not use boot camp( says disk full), i cant install virtual box because they say I have a virtual hard disk already. and yet there is none in the box list.
how do i get my disk not full, I am most unwilling to reinstall my os X.

What and where were you partitioning/installing?
Please be explicit and provide all details.

on my mac os 10.6.8. 250Gb hard drive not partitioned at all.
ill go step by step,
opened virtual box
clicked new
at welcome screen, clicked continue
at os select, i selected windows, windows 7 64bit, named it windows 7
At memory select, selected 3333 MB of Ram
At the hard disk menu, create new hard disk, left the start up box already selected.
At the next menu, i left it at VDI
At data size i selected fixed size
then i selected 200GB for windows 7
clicked create
it said installing,
after about 10 seconds, i hit cancel...
it said " canceling..."
5 mins later it still said canceling
i click quit, then the X, then quit, then it ended
Now when i get to the part where i click create it says this

Failed to create the hard disk storage /Users/scaleblue/VirtualBox VMs/windows 7/windows 7.vdi.

Could not create the medium storage unit '/Users/scaleblue/VirtualBox VMs/windows 7/windows 7.vdi'.

VDI: disk would overflow creating image '/Users/scaleblue/VirtualBox VMs/windows 7/windows 7.vdi' (VERR_DISK_FULL).

Result Code: VBOX_E_FILE_ERROR (0x80BB0004)
Component: Medium
Interface: IMedium {53f9cc0c-e0fd-40a5-a404-a7a5272082cd}

250Gb hard drive not partitioned at all.
So is the a spare/second drive on the MAC, or a partition that you created and did not format?
VirtualBox saves the image as a file. The drive that you create the image on must be formatted.
Otherwise VirtualBox will not be able to use it and the error you are seeing is kind of what this is saying. As far as VirtualBox is concerned since it is not partitioned it sees it as full.

im not using any other hard drive just the standard macbook HDD
the HDD at the moment is not partitioned and it wasnt partitioned before i installed virtual box
this is my 1st time using virtual box, so i dont understand how it works to much. but i thought it would split my mac partition, create a windows partition and then use virtual box to access that partition.

VirtualBox is an application that allows you to install various other operating systems. It is a type 2 hypervisor meaning that it requires a host operating system and a formated drive to store its image on.
You might get more out of it if you read the Users manual that come with VirtualBox or at least read it HERE
You don't need to read the entire thing but the first chapter or two will help you a lot.
