Virtualizing my domain controller

Hi all,
I am looking at vmware and virtualbox as possible solutions to lower the hardware footprint in my home. I currently have rack mounted servers that generate heat and eat a ton of power. I am thinking about building a vmware whitebox or virtualbox in order to facilitate virtualizing my domain controller, av server and media server. I would greatly appreciate any advice current users might have about going down this path. These virtual servers need to sit on my home network, the domain controller would not only be used for authentication but also as a DHCP and DNS server on my network. The AV server pushes out AV updates. The media server is accessed by wireless devices on my network. Finally, I would also like to run a Linux VM of some kind. I would prefer to access that VM remotely using some kind of UI.
Once again, thanks for all the help!
