Improve 3D performance (for gaming)

I've got Windows XP running as guest OS under Windows Vista host. I'm trying to run Rome: Total War under the virtual XP (why? because I want to use snapshots to act as a save-game feature which is missing inside battles).

I've got the 3D acceleration configured, so the game runs; however, it's unplayable. The FMVs are choppy, particularly with regard to the audio (but I think that's just because it's tied to slow-running video). The mouse pointer on the strategic map doesn't respond well, and moves about once every 5 seconds, by at least 1/10 of the screen width at a go.

I've seen reports on here that the 3D passthrough's actually pretty good, so I must be doing something wrong. What can I tweak to make things better? (Or, what information do you guys need to have a punt at what's stopping it working well?)

Thanks!

Its easy.

Forget it. VMs are not made for gaming. Too much performance lost. And nothing to do against this.

And dont ask for other products. VMWARE has tthe same problems.
