Shared folders not working on Linux Guest

I use VirtualBox on a Mac (OS X Lion) with a Ubuntu (command line only) or Debian (also no gui) to build custom LiveCD's. After I'm done, the file I need to put on the host is in the root of the guest hard drive. I tried installing the VirtualBox Guest Additions, with no success. Also, I've tried on a Ubuntu guest with a GUI. Set up a shared folder but I can't mount it. It's crucial I get this working. Any suggestions?
