windows 2008 AD - DNS records

Post by skud »

I am learning active directory [and virtual box, networking :-)].

VirtualBox 4.1.6 runs on a win7 64 bit. I have installed a windows 2008 (32 bit - SP2) guest. It has single network interface [intnet].

details of virtual box dhcpserver for intnet:

Code: Select all

VBoxManage list dhcpservers
NetworkName: intnet
IP: 169.254.155.1
NetworkMask: 255.255.0.0
lowerIPAddress: 169.254.0.1
upperIPAddress: 169.254.253.253
Enabled: [b]No[/b]

guest server [win2008] ipconfig:

Code: Select all

Problem # 1

Code: Select all

nslookup win2008vb
fails on win2008vb itself.

Code: Select all

DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
Server: UnKnown
Address:  fe80::53f:351a:1e62:9b4b

DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to UnKnown timed-out
I added win2008vb A & AAA records to win2008vb's local DNS (AD managed) to workaround the issue. But these records are not sticking and vanish within a few seconds. This sounds more like a win2008 AD install/ config issue rather than virtual box issue.

Please let me know if you came across this problem before & if so, how you resolved it.

Thanks for any tips or links re setup of win2008 AD on virtual box intnet ..

I am planning to join a win7 client guest to this domain once I fix DNS/ AD issue. fingers crossed

Thanks Perryg. I had a look at it before I started. My set up looks even simpler as I don't need internet connectivity.

intnet -- win2008vb

and

intnet -- win7vb

PS: I am leaving win7vb alone [i.e not worried abt., not running] so that I can narrow down the AD/ DNS issue. When I had win7vb running, I was able to ping & share folders btn win2008vb & win7vb.

I don't think your guests local IP address is a correct one, try a 10.x.x.x range.
