Windows 95 display recently garbled

I had my W95 running beautifully until a few weeks ago. Since then, the display is garbled. And garbled. Even with command line only; I attach a screenshot. At first, I was sure it was the crappy ATI-driver of my Linux host (I had moved from Nvidia to ATI then). Luckily, I had an exported version (.ova) from earlier. Today I started it on a NVidia-box, and it is just as garbled. Could it be that the update of 4.1.4 to 4.1.6 came with a regression?

Why not reading the Win9x Howtos in the tutorial section? Often discussed.
